Home » Blog » Car Rental in Georgia in Autumn: Choosing the Right Car
In short: Car rental in Georgia in autumn depends mainly on your route, as the weather is usually comfortable at this time of year. Compact cars are suitable for Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi, while sedans and crossovers are a good choice for Kakheti and Kazbegi. In Svaneti, a body-on-frame 4×4 SUV is needed for more difficult roads. Below, the Naniko car rental team shares ready-made options for different types of trips, along with a calendar of the main autumn events.
We looked at real road conditions in Georgia during the autumn season and compared them with the Naniko fleet to find the right cars for different types of trips:
If you are flying into Tbilisi, find out whether you should rent a car with a driver. This option may be right for you, as a local driver knows the roads and their specific conditions well.
One of the main features of renting a car in Georgia in autumn is the chance to combine your trip with local cultural events. The holidays and festivals are spread across different parts of the country, so having your own car is often the most practical way to fit several of them into one trip. We have listed the main autumn events in chronological order:
Where: Churches throughout Georgia This important Orthodox Christian holiday commemorates the birth of the Virgin Mary. It is a good time to include churches and monasteries in your autumn route.
Where: Batumi, Ajara A rural tourism festival dedicated to the culture, traditions, music and cuisine of Ajara. Visitors can see traditional products, local dishes, folk performances and crafts in the center of Batumi.
Where: Mainly Kakheti, followed later by Imereti, Racha and Ajara Rtveli is one of the main cultural events of the autumn season. There is no fixed date because different grape varieties ripen at different times. The harvest includes grape picking, winemaking and large traditional feasts (supras).
Where: Tbilisi, the capital Tbilisoba is the city’s main annual festival and a popular autumn celebration. The historic center fills with markets, concerts, traditional food, wine and local products. Naniko tip: Leave the car parked and explore the festival area on foot.
Where: Mtskheta, the ancient capital of Georgia One of the country’s major religious and cultural celebrations, centered around Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. The streets around the cathedral are closed for the festivities.
Where: Particularly celebrated in mountain regions such as Svaneti and Racha This Orthodox feast commemorates the Archangels Michael and Gabriel and the other bodiless heavenly powers. The date is observed on November 21 in the Georgian church calendar.
Where: Throughout Georgia An official public holiday and one of the most widely celebrated religious holidays in the country.
Yes. Autumn is a busy season for wine tourism and regional trips, especially in Kakheti. Booking 2 – 4 weeks in advance gives you a better chance of getting the car class you want and a good rental price.
The legal limit is 0.3‰ (as of 2026). Even during autumn holidays and Rtveli, when wine tastings are common, Naniko strongly recommends not drinking before driving. Read the traffic rules in Georgia before your trip, especially if you plan to drive on mountain roads, where road conditions require extra attention. Fines are high, and safety on difficult mountain roads should come first.
The distance from Tbilisi to Telavi, the main city of the Alazani Valley, is around 95 km. The drive usually takes about 1.5 – 2 hours, depending on the route and traffic. You can travel through Gombori Pass or take the longer route via Gurjaani.
Most religious holidays and city festivals, including Tbilisoba and Mtskhetoba, take place over one or two days. Rtveli is the main exception: the harvest moves between different wineries and regions and can continue from September into November.
Depending on your route, you can add Full Cover insurance and roadside technical assistance. Mobile Wi-Fi can also be useful for navigation in the mountains. If you arrive in Tbilisi and plan to fly out of Batumi, One-Way Rental can save you from returning the car to the starting location.
Georgia is beautiful at any time of year, but autumn has its own appeal. The landscapes turn golden, centuries-old traditions come to life, and you can experience the country’s famous hospitality without the intense summer heat.
If you need a reliable car for your route, the Naniko team is always here to help. We will provide a fully prepared seasonal car for your trip, whether you are planning a city break, a wine route or a mountain journey.
Come to Georgia and make the most of your autumn trip!
