Where is traffic worst in Tbilisi?

The busiest time on Tbilisi roads is usually from 18:00 to 20:00 on weekdays, when evening traffic builds up across the city.

Traffic is usually heaviest on the main roads through Saburtalo, Vake, Avlabari and Isani, especially on weekday mornings and late afternoons. The roads along both sides of the Mtkvari River can also get very busy, including the right and left banks, as they carry a lot of traffic through and across central Tbilisi.

In Saburtalo and Vake, traffic builds up on the main roads during the morning and evening commute. Around Avlabari and Isani, busy routes toward the city center and narrower streets can slow things down quickly.

Traffic also gets worse on roads leaving Tbilisi before public holidays and long weekends. Didi Dighomi and the Lilo area can become particularly busy when many people leave the city at the same time. This is common around New Year, Easter and long weekends.

To avoid the worst traffic:

  1. Leave early in the morning or after 21:00 on busy holiday weekends.
  2. Check live traffic in Google Maps or Yandex Maps before you leave.
  3. If you are driving to the mountains or Kakheti, avoid starting around midday on Friday.
  4. Allow extra time when crossing the city during weekday rush hours.

Traffic can change quickly after an accident, roadworks or bad weather, so check the live map shortly before you start your trip.
